A Makeover And A Giveaway

September 10th, 2008656 views 52 Comments Stumble It!

No, you haven’t landed on a wrong page, this is still Culinarty….after a makeover. It’s been so hard keeping this secret from you but I wanted it to be a surprise. I couldn’t bare another day without showing you guys the new design. However, I didn’t manage to keep it a surprise until the entire work was done so you might stumble upon some unfinished business here and there that will be taken care of in a few days time.

This also calls for a gift, don’t you think so? A gift to you, my readers! I can’t imagine a better company at my expandable, ever-growing dinner table and that’s why I decided to have my very first giveaway :)

But before I give you the details on the giveaway, just a quick reminder on the Original Recipes Round-Up. You still have a few days to send me your culinary concoctions and participate in this month’s round-up (deadline: 15 September).

Some of you might already know I have a tiny kitchen (2.3 m × 2.4 m) and that means a minimum of utensils. In case you ever wondered why none of my recipes calls for an electric mixer, a blender or other gadgets, the answer is simple: I don’t have the space and that’s why Culinarty focuses on minimum kitchen utensils recipes. I know some of you are struggling with the same lack of space and you know what? The stuff you can do with a little imagination and a wooden spoon is simply incredible! Speaking of the wooden spoon, I can’t imagine a more useful and valuable tool or a better friend in the kitchen.

What about you? What is the kitchen tool that you just couldn’t do without? Answer this question in the comment section between today, Wednesday 10 September and Saturday 13 September (midnight GMT) and become eligible to win Lou Manna’s Digital Food Photography. Only one entry per person please.

The lucky winner will be randomly chosen and I will send her/him the book anywhere in the world.

I couldn’t do without my spatula. I use it all the time for both baking and cooking. It’s so versatile and more importantly, super easy to clean!

  2. You’ve been tagged for a question meme!

  3. I love the new look!!!! It’s very clean and easy to navigate, it’s great! What an interesting giveaway!
Only 1 ustensil? Only 1? Oh well, maybe my wisk…

  4. Hey - brilliant - love the new look!

I don’t know if this counts, but I couldn’t do without my cast iron frying pan. It spreads heat evenly, so no hot spots… and best of all I can chuck the whole thing in the oven if making a gratin or frittata!

My second thing is my knife-sharpener!

  5. Your makeover looks wonderful! I like the look and love your idea of a giveaway. For me, the kitchen tool I couldn’t do without is my large wooden spatula. It has a great wide head that’s perfect for my wok which I cook in almost daily. I can mix, flip, break up ground meats with it so easily that I don’t have a need for much anything else. Being that it’s wooden, it’s safe for my non stick pans as well too. Such a versatile tool in my kitchen and I’d be sad if I ever lost it. Coming in at a close second are my pair of long, locking tongs. Being that I’m 5 ft tall, my tongs serve as my extended arm to reach things on high shelves and counters, pick up things, stir things… both on the stove top and grill!

Hey stumbled onto your blog. Been married for a little more than a year now. Hunt through the net & call my mother for recipes and cooking tips. Considering I didn’t cook at all before I got married I would say I have come a long way :)

I would say my kitchen knife is the one thing I just can’t do without

    September 10th, 2008 at 04:16
  7. Loved the new look of your blog..the one utensil I cannot live without has to be my wooden spatula…

There are a few things I couldn’t do without but the most useful of all is my kitchen knife. I can’t use any other knife.

Oops, in my hurry to reply I forgot to say that your new blog look is great.

  10. Great new layout!

Hm, since i run into the same problem of not having a lot of kitchen space, frankly, my most prized asset is the wooden spoon too! But other than that… for variety’s sake I’ll take the name of another one: the spatula. I use it shamelessly to flip pancakes, make fried eggs, ice cakes or even stir a lot of stuff when needed. I think i really couldn’t do without it!

  11. I love the new look. When I opened your post in my reader, I thought I wouldn’t like it because the other one was so nice but I was wrong :)

I’d hate to be without my nonstick tongs. I use them as often as a spatula or spoon.

I’ll tell you, I feel blessed to have a big kitchen with room for gadgets but it takes talent to make great food in a small kitchen. Keep up the delicious work!

  12. Great new design…LOVE IT! Hmmm…what can’t I live without in the kitchen would be my digital kitchen scale. Because I bake a lot and use mostly cookbook with US measurements, I have to convert most of my ingredients to metric and weigh them. Couldn’t do without my scale, that would be a tragedy!

I think the kitchen tool I could not live without would have to be my kitchen knife. It was one I ordered from Pampered Chef and I love it.

BTW, love the look of your blog. It is clean and easy on the eyes and easy to navigate.

  14. Hi Lore,
From what I can see, many of the great dishes come from someone who own tiny kitchen. A lot of people have grand and hi tech kitchen appliances in my neighborhood, but they don’t cook and can’t cook. They just have it because it increases the value of their home. Most of them are really gorgeous, yet lack of function. I can just see that they are only for display, not for a real cook.

About your new design, I like it, it looks really neat! Well done Lore!

I can not imagine being in the kitchen without my knife and my brassier. Both of this items are very versatile. I use my brassier for frying, sauteing, stew, so I almost use it everyday for my everyday cooking.

  15. Your blog is looking lovely with the makeover!
You posed a real tough question, as I am a sucker for kitchen gagets. One of my favourite things is a little double ended rolling pin thingy, you can dump the pastry or dough into the tin and roll it out in there.

    September 10th, 2008 at 06:17
  16. Hi Lore, really love the new look, is so beauty. Icant stay without my spatula and two knifes that I love (I have by many years) but when Idont find them Im really upset!!I post the other times when I travel inside the country I take some of my spatulas knifes and others, yea.
What’s beautiful book!! Really beautiful! xxGloria

  17. I love surprises—the new look that is! Great job with your blog, very clean. I like it.

The kitchen utensil I couldn’t live without? Probably my can opener. How else are you going to get into those things?

I have another, my silicon stirrer/spoon. I cook with it religiously.

    September 10th, 2008 at 08:47
  18. Oh, definitely need a book on food photography! =)

I hate to be a copycat, but I’d have to say wooden spoon too — the need we feel more so than ever since the kiddies keep playing with them and breaking them!

    September 10th, 2008 at 09:15
  19. Hey Lore
Love the new look of your blog. Hmmmm , let me guess, one utensil i couln’t live without would most probably be the kitchen knife !

    September 10th, 2008 at 10:15
  20. Dude, this layout is awesome. I love the colors, and the header is refreshing (if that makes sense).

What can’t I live without. Rubber spatula. Without it, I’d be missing like half of every cake batter ever made.

Oh and the Jets sooo won :)

    September 10th, 2008 at 10:15
  21. The new layout is great!
Just one utensil? Oh god… I think probably a good knife is essential. Although I find my whisk indispensable as well.

Congratulations to your new template, Lore! I like it. Looks fresh!

    September 11th, 2008 at 01:52
  23. I love the new look! How did you do this? It looks fabulous! I love the new tiny pictures on the front. Kitchen tool I couldn’t do without? I guess it would be the tiny spatulas from Williams and Sonama my Mom gave me for Christmas years ago. I use them to cook my eggs in the morning, stir soup…everything!

    September 11th, 2008 at 05:16
  24. luv the new look,.i cant live without kitchen knife..and just like u even my kitchen is tiny one,..ceeya…;-)

    September 11th, 2008 at 05:20
  25. New layout is simply awesome!!! Kitchen utensil I cant live without would have to be my ceramin knives. My kitchen feels incomplete without them!!

    September 11th, 2008 at 05:23
  26. Great new design! Mmm a kitchen tool I could not live without is my wooden spoon that I got from my mom, because I know she cooks with the same.

    September 11th, 2008 at 09:40
  27. great new layout, lore!
as for my essential kitchen tool, i’d have to say that other than my knives and such, i probably couldn’t go a day with out my coffee maker. :)

    September 11th, 2008 at 10:26
  28. great new look!!! for me, as my kid1 said, my mama’s big spoon… yup it’s my stainless big spoon… i always cook with it… :)

    September 11th, 2008 at 01:34
  29. Hi Lore..
Congrats for the new look. I love it so much… the color is sooooooo me *wink*

I also adore my wooden spoon, it helps me a lot in cooking and baking.

    September 11th, 2008 at 03:11
  30. Hey Lore! I like the new design, too. It’s all fresh…and new… :) So the gadget I couldn’t live without? I’d say rubber spatula. Let’s make that my heat-safe rubber spatula. I use it to stir, mix, fold, or even taste test. It can scrape the bottom of the pot or pan, it can scrape a bowl, I can leave it in the pot while I do other things and not worry it’ll melt; It’s just the best.

Found your blog today and it’s very beautiful. Very nice colors.
About the essential kitchen tool I’d be lost without my trusty knife. All that meat needs a sharp edge to get through.

    September 11th, 2008 at 04:16
  32. Congrats on the new look Lore! Very pretty and clean looking as always. ;)

As for the kitchen tool, I have to have everything but the 1 thing that I cannot live without got to be my wooden cutting board. I just realise that I always have something to cut or chop or mince. lol.

    September 11th, 2008 at 06:27
  33. Funny but I couldn’t do without my blender, mixer and food processor!

    September 11th, 2008 at 09:08
  34. Lo

Mmm. How can I pick just one?

I’m afraid I’m going to have to be awfully derivative and go with the trusty old wooden spoon. It’s my friend in times of need… and since it’s not metallic, it won’t ruin my sourdough starter! :)

    September 11th, 2008 at 09:24
  35. Eileen

Hey Lore! I think I’ll also have to go with the wooden spoon

    September 11th, 2008 at 10:00
  36. The one tool I could never do without are my chopsticks. They can stir, strain, lift, flip, etc. So versatile and handy.

    September 11th, 2008 at 11:28
  37. I love the clean, fresh colors and modern look, Lore. Great choices!

    September 12th, 2008 at 03:35
  38. Oops, I forgot to mention my indispensable zester. I use it for citrus peel, cheese, and spices like fresh nutmeg.

    September 12th, 2008 at 03:36
  39. Kam A

Great design! My favorite is a Chicago Cutlery Paring Knife :)

    September 12th, 2008 at 03:47
  40. Lore I love the new look! I think my favorite, can’t-do-without item in the kitchen is my chef’s knife. Daniel brought it along with him when we got married, he makes fun of me for using it so much, from mincing to slicing… its my favorite knife for EVERYTHING that requires a sharp edge! I’m getting quite good at using it too! :)
Course that is not to say my wooden spoons don’t get their fair share of use… I need some new ones as mine are beginning to look quite shabby.

My favourite kitchen tool… mmm… of course ¡my whisk! which I like to use to whisk the milk of my latte macchiato as I don’t have a good espresso machine! :D

    September 12th, 2008 at 03:37
  42. Three years ago I bought a silicone spatula in Chicago. Now I can´t live without it. I must say I have forgotten my old wooden spoon, but I will always love it. Good luck!!

    September 12th, 2008 at 03:57
  43. Hello, mi favourite kitchen tool, are my hands… ;)

    September 12th, 2008 at 04:00
  44. Hi,I think I could´nt cook without my cook timer.I use it in the kitchen and…everywhere at home.
    Good luck !!!

    September 12th, 2008 at 09:47
  45. Nicole

My favorite utensil would have to be my kitchen tongs. Not only great for cooking, but also getting stuff from the tall shelves in the kitchen. Multi-purpose rocks!!

    September 12th, 2008 at 11:51
  46. Ana

Hi!!! I think my favorite kitchen tol is my Kitchen Aid…

    September 13th, 2008 at 12:23
  47. I couldn’t live without my heat resistent spatulas.

    September 13th, 2008 at 03:01
  48. I can’t cook without a good (and sharp!) kitchen knife!

    September 14th, 2008 at 04:57
  49. Lore, although I am late… this new look is SUPER!!! Very user-friendly, very intellengent, very sleek, love it!
I am with you about min gadgets. But since I only own very few utensils and tools, they are ALL my life-saver when come to cooking. Very lucky I have a fairy long (but narrow) marble table, really count my blessing esp when I do pastry or pasta dough :D

    September 14th, 2008 at 08:02
  50. Hi!

    September 16th, 2008 at 12:32
  52. The new look is very clean and soft; quite appealing to the eye! Good work. As for my invaluable kitchen tool, it would have to be my Santoku knife… I can’t live without it. Too bad I didn’t make it in time for the contest!
